Number One: Mulhacén
From Capileira, last village on the road to Sierra Nevada National Park, the number one hike has to be Mulhacén mountain, which at 3,479 metres is the highest in mainland Spain. It is challenging, but no climbing is involved. An overnight stay at the comfortable mountain shelter of Refugio Poqueira is recommendable and included in this itinerary. 7 hrs - There and back or circular walk |
Number Two: La Gaseosa
The Tahá valley is a special delight. This easy circular trail has views, two tiny hamlets and a unique, natural fizzy water fountain. It ends at a choice of country taverns. 1 hr 30 mins - Circular walk |
Number Three: Bubión Sunset
Another very rewarding short walk that ends at a bar. The views from the top combine the Poqueira Gorge and Sierra Nevada with the Contraviesa and the Mediterranean Sea. 2 hrs - Circular walk |
Number Four: O Sel Ling
This undemanding walk to Bubión in the Poqueira Gorge sets out from 1,600 metres and the special atmosphere of a Tibetan Buddhist Centre. 3 hrs - One-way walk |
Number Five: La Escarihuela
Surely the best Tahá Valley walk of them all. It has varied terrain, unbeatable views, the ancient switchback itself and a beautiful ending. 4 hrs 30 mins - Circular walk |
Number Six: La Cebadilla
One of the very best walks from Capileira, this route provides wonderful sights and views both on the way up the gorge and coming back. You will cross the river twice and have a ghost village thrown in for good measure. 3 hrs 15 mins - Circular walk |
Number Seven: Poqueira Gorge to Tahá Valley
A delightful walk that sets out from Capileira in the Poqueira Gorge and presents beautiful views of the Contraviesa mountains before descending through ancient chestnut trees to Pitres, capital of La Tahá. Get to know two quite different aspects of the Alpujarra: the Barranco del Poqueira is dramatic and spectacular, the Tahá de Pitres softer, quieter and warmer. 2 hrs 15 mins - One-way walk |
Number Eight: Four hamlets
A nice and easy route linking four pretty white hamlets in La Tahá valley. All the villages have drinking water fountains where you can refill your bottle and one has a choice of bar-restaurants. 1 hr 30 mins - Circular walk |
Number Nine: La Salud A fabulous day that starts out with a leisurely drive around the mountains to Yegen. The hike goes up passing ancient trees and streams, interspersed with expansive views south. Walking the “Path of Health” can only be a good thing! It’s not long, just interesting and satisfying. 1 hr 30 mins - Circular walk |
