There are plenty of simple and decent local restaurants in the villages of La Alpujarra. Some have considerably more to offer than others and here is our pick of the best. They nearly all have outdoor terraces.
CAPILEIRA RESTAURANTS
El Corral del Castaño
Offers an intimate and relaxed ambience in a large, converted 16th century Alpujarran house, where tables are laid out in different rooms and the outdoor terrace. The chef has established an excellent menu and meat dishes score highly. It’s a lovely place for a meal. Located in the corner of the village square. Closes Wednesdays and for staff holidays 8 - 18 January 2020. From January to March 2020, it will house an exhibition by local artist, Maryse Alen.
La Pizzeria
A pizza restaurant might not sound very Spanish or enticing, but don’t be put off by the name. Apart from the advertised dishes, which include trout and stewed wild boar, there is often an interesting dish of the day (plato del día). The pizzas are also very good (the local wild oregano may give them their distinctive taste), and are prepared before your eyes in the open kitchen by the chef-owner. Situated opposite the church round the corner from the main village square. Closed on Tuesdays.
El Jardín de los Sabores
Indian food in La Alpujarra! Capileira's latest culinary venture has two cooks. One prepares traditional Alpujarran fare, while the other makes delicious Indian meals. In summer months the well-kept garden provides a very pleasant environment for eating out. Located at the top of the village on the main road.
El Tilo
Nicely situated on the village square, it serves meals from breakfast time onwards. It has a log fire in winter.
El Asador
On the main road through the village, this neat and tidy restaurant is noted for its meat dishes.
CAPILEIRA BAR-CAFETERIAS
El Atroje
José & Paco pour the best cañas in town. Small inside but with a summer terrace, it’s the perfect place to order a platter of local mountain-cured ham (una ración de jamón serrano). First bar on the right on the main street into Capileira village from the main road. Closed on Tuesdays.
El Tilo
A popular place to meet and have a daytime drink on the raised terrace above the village square. Also serves full meals.
La Alacena
An authentic little old cellar bar in back of a shop that sells local produce, honey, goat’s cheese, almond soap. Just the place to try local costa wine.
El Moraima
Opens early and serves excellent breakfasts with good coffee. Also a day time bar with a terrace. On the main road. Closes Wednesdays.
Muy Buenas
Open until late for those who fancy a bit of high altitude village nightlife. St Moritz it ain’t, but hey: whoever is there makes the atmosphere. On the main road up from the Ayuntamiento and right down an alley.
El Tinao
A locals bar with a good selection of tapas. On the street leading up from the supermarket & pharmacy.
La Loma Púa
This locals bar on the main road has a balcony with a great view.
Taberna La Trastienda de la Monja
On the main square, this tapas bar and offers a range of beers and good Granada wines with local ham, cured meats and cheese to go with it. Closes Sunday night and Mondays.
BUBIÓN RESTAURANTS
El Teide
A family restaurant going back to the 1930s, this is a good choice for dining outside on its cherry garden terraces. Very good meat dishes and generous mixed salads. On the main road: you can’t miss it. Closed on Tuesdays.
Lo Nuestro
The restaurant opened in 2018 and has gained a reputation for serving tasty dishes with touch of imagination. Unpretentious, as befits an Alpujarra venue. Just down the road from El Teide. Closes Mondays.

El Mirador
A nice summer garden restaurant with a view . Its menu sometimes features fresh fish.
Hotel San Roque
Has a pleasant dining room and a good reputation.
El Frenazo
Popular café-bar by the square.
MECINA FONDALES RESTAURANTS
Good meals are available at three country bar-restaurants, all in Mecina village:
Cueva La Mora Luna
Friendly and idiosyncratic, with occasional live music events. Eat inside or out on the terrace.
L’Atelier
The vegetarian and vegan option, with a French chef.
El Barranquillo
Good home cooking.
BUSQUISTAR RESTAURANTS
Bar Paco
No frills here, just a typical local bar that serves very generous tapas with your drinks (beer or wine, not soft drinks). For a more filling meal, simply order a selection of raciones from the menu.
TREVELEZ RESTAURANTS
La Fragua
Simply one of the best restaurants in La Alpujarra. It has excellent food & service and picture windows with views down the valley. Located in the barrio alto: the highest of Trevélez's three levels.
ORGIVA RESTAURANTS
El Flor del Limonero
Has earned a good reputation in recent years for its food, good value and service. Located beneath Hotel Mirasol near the new petrol station on the main road through town.
El Almazara
Specializes in pizzas and has tables in an orange grove garden. On the main road through the town.
La Baraka
Moroccan tea house and restaurant serves excellent shawarmas. By the free car park that turns into a market area on Thursday mornings.
